Man's Nature

by Loriston Fennell

We value our natural resources above almost all else where I live.
In Vermont we have a diverse range of plant life, enumerable streams and rivers, as well as a highly varied climate.

This orchard is filled with hundreds of apple trees. It gives people the opportunity to pick their own fruit and spend an hour or two in an engaging setting.

The orchard closes as the sun goes down, and it’s patrons leave with both apples and memories of a beautiful setting

Although this dam is relatively young
it is already eroding the rock it overlooks. Creating electricity is important, but some wonder whether it is worth the effect on natural landscapes, both cosmetic and ecological

This dam suplys power to, as well as keeps water from flooding the town of Bradford, below.

This solar panel generates electricity to a nearby house

As one of the newest inventions in the world of energy, solar panels are highly sophisticated and delicate  pieces of technology. However they are not particularly elegant. Since they require direct sunlight they cannot be hidden by trees and must be close to the power supplies they feed. They are often, like this one, neer rodes. Until we can find a way to keep these arrays discrete, renewable energy will come at a cost that is more than monetary.

In Vermont we are expanding our use of nature to fulfill our needs, and wants. We must remember that as we change our world we risk unsettling the balance we all know and love.
